Frustrated players leaving the game...

Postby Zero on 26 May 2008, 17:57

Playing Zero Ballistics isn't that fun anymore. Whenever one of the really good players join a match he is able to upgrade his tank in the first 2 minutes. With the extra power and the nano bots repairing the tank every now and then it becomes practically impossible for the newbies to destroy his tank. They get frustrated and leave the match within the next 5 minutes. Recently I have seen many matches end like this.
I think making some damages permanent could solve this problem. The nano bots shouldn't be able to repair everything and maybe a damaged tank should become slower or loose some targeting precision.

Maybe even slow the repair rate down might adress this issue as well. Of course what they should do is watch for an enemy to be engaged then join the battle one the enemy tank has taken damage.

I don't think the repair is the problem, other games like nexuiz use that too. The permanent upgrades are different - in other games you loose your upgrades (there usually other weapons and armour) when you die, here you get full energy with all upgrades. Maybe make it more easy to upgrade but when you die you loose em all - or at least one upgrade level. It is even impossible to win when there are more experienced players there and one "eats" more noobs at the beginning, then its tank is upgraded and much harder to destroy, especially 100 vs 140 energy.

Perhaps the nanites could be activated manually and you only have so many? or allow detailed settings by the host to affect recharge rate and rate of upgrade.

The simplest solution would be to have player lvl (e.g. novice, adept, pro) servers but there really isn't enough players to do that at this time in my opinion...

As a test I'll start a new 'newbie' server just to see how popular it is... those of you who are any good please don't go there :)

Ok newbie server available with a lower player cap (12 players) and a 15 second spawn invincibility timer to give people time to get their bearings.

Hi all,

we were thinking about a lot of solutions for this problem today, including: make healing very very slow, disabling nano bots at all or modifing the upgrades. I have to admit i like Seekers' idea best and i hope that people playing the game for the first time will accept the offer of a newbie server.

I don't know where you would need those 15s invincibility - in many cases you are much farer away from next opponent. And then the tank is so slow that you wish it would be a race car to get to next one - especially on huge areas with few people.
