How to Fix sound problem in Linux (Ubuntu,Mint,Debian)

Postby xendon on 16 Feb 2011, 19:03

Today i started whit "Zero Ballistics" and had the sound problem like:

AL lib: alsa.c:344: Could not open playback device 'default': No such file or directory
ERROR : Sound OpenAL:
context: after initializing devices
ERROR : OpenAL was not able to find any sound device on this computer!!
ERROR : Sound OpenAL:
context: SoundManager::createALSoundSources
Warning : There are less than 8 sound sources available! Available sources: 0
SoundManager::SoundManager ->
Unable to create any OpenAL Sound Source!!

or:

AL lib: alsa.c:344: Could not open playback device 'hw:0,0': Invalid argument
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1429:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Unknown field hint
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1429:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Unknown field hint

So what to do? To fix it is really simple we have to set a symbolic link to the right libasound.so.2

Example on Debian x64 based system

On a x86 system you maybe need to change lib32 to lib.

Code:
1. Switch user to root
su root
sudo su root (on Ubuntu)

2. check for libasound

ls -alh /usr/lib32/ | grep libasound

Output:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 2010-12-26 15:44 libasound.so.2 -> libasound.so.2.0.0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 787K 2010-10-14 09:03 libasound.so.2.0.0

!!! If libasound isn't installed please install it via:

apt-get install lib32asound2 libasound2-plugins

3. remove or move the libasound.so.2 in the "shared_libs" (game directory)

cd /the/place/my/game/is/located/
cd shared_libs
rm libasound.so.2 (optional do: mv libasound.so.2 libasound.so.2_old)

ln -s /usr/lib32/libasound.so.2 libasound.so.2

4. check if it works

ls -alh | grep libasound

Output:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 2011-02-16 18:41 libasound.so.2 -> /usr/lib32/libasound.so.2

5. Enjoy Game play

Well at last let me tell you that my terminal still told me:

AL lib: alsa.c:344: Could not open playback device 'hw:0,0': Device or resource busy
AL lib: alsa.c:344: Could not open playback device 'hw:1,0': No such file or directory
AL lib: oss.c:179: Could not open /dev/dsp: No such file or directory

But the sound works well.
