rise over the run

Is this an important point to a philosopher of science or philosopher of mathematics that the rise over the run is not the slope but it is a way of computing the slope? Can someone from set me straight. Why is this an important issue, if in fact it is an issue at all? To me "rise over run" seems just fine as the definition?
